Turning 30 called for more than a birthday party. It called for a royal affair inspired by one of history's most extravagant hostesses, Queen Marie Antoinette. Complete with candlelight, crystal candelabras, couture-inspired desserts, custom cocktails, and a ballroom transformed into a modern-day Versailles, every detail was designed to transport guests into my own Royal Court.
Behind Designing the Experience...

When it came time to celebrate my 30th birthday, there was only one design-muse worthy of the occasion: Queen Marie Antoinette. Known for her lavish lifestyle, grand entertaining, and unmistakable sense of opulence, she inspired an evening filled with French elegance and modern glamour. A palette of coral shades, antique gold, tiffany-blue, candlelight, and crystal set the stage for a celebration fit for royalty.
Before the first guest arrived, every candle was lit, every napkin was adjusted, every menu was perfectly placed, and every centerpiece was inspected one final time. As both the birthday girl and event designer, I loved seeing months of planning come together while making those last-minute refinements that often go unnoticed but make all the difference.

🏰 Welcome to the Royal Court
Subtle was never the assignment. Towering, over-the-top floral centerpieces filled the ballroom and added to the sense of grandeur I wanted throughout the celebration. Soft pink blooms, lush arrangements, candlelight, and gold details came together to create tables that felt romantic, regal, and unapologetically extravagant.
Guests were welcomed into Stephanie's Royal Court, where every detail was thoughtfully curated to create an immersive dining experience. From the customized crest and printed stationery to the music-filled glowing ballroom, and dramatic candlelight, the evening was designed to feel like a contemporary soirée inside the Palace of Versailles.
The experience wasn't only visual. Live music helped set the tone for the evening, with a pianist and saxophonist adding an elegant, romantic soundtrack to the celebration. It gave the room that extra layer of sophistication and made the entire evening feel less like a birthday party and more like stepping into my own little royal court.
🕯️Tablescape Fit for Versailles
Long banquet tables were layered with blush sequin linens, chevron runners, antique gold chargers, coral satin napkins, custom menus, and crystal candlelight. Towering floral centerpieces overflowing with roses added height and romance, while ornate gold frames and delicate decorative accents completed the look.
Every place setting was carefully styled to create a tablescape that felt both regal and inviting. I arranged the coral satin napkins to resemble bows and finished each with a jeweled, pearl-encrusted napkin ring. Because apparently even the napkins needed jewelry.
Even the place cards received a little royal treatment because, of course, a basic place card holder simply wouldn't do! Each guest's name was displayed in a miniature gold candelabra place card holder, a tiny detail that added another layer of old-world opulence to the tablescape. Because at my royal fête, simply finding your seat needed to feel fabulous.
My own place setting received a little extra attention. In addition to a miniature candelabra holding a place card bearing my name and the very important title of Birthday Girl, I placed an ornate jeweled crown atop a miniature ring pillow along with my pearl wrapped ostrich feather fan. You know... just in case anyone was confused about where the queen was seated.
🥂 Sips from the Royal Court
Of course, the cocktail menu was inspired by yours truly. I collaborated with my bartender to create a lineup of signature drinks where the names actually correlated with the cocktails and their ingredients. I wanted a little something for everyone, so the menu featured a mix of fruity cocktails and stronger, more traditionally “manly” pours. Guests could choose from Mademoiselle Stephanie, French Kisses, Thirty Diamond Jewels, Royal Treats, Crown Royale, Versailles, and the aptly named Knights of Honor. Because apparently turning my cocktail preferences into an entire royal drink menu was completely necessary.
🍸 Stephanie's Little Planner's Note: If you've prepaid gratuity for your bartending service, discuss the tip jar policy beforehand. Some bartenders may still display one for guests who want to leave an additional tip, so it's worth clarifying your preference before the celebration. ✍🏾
🍗 A Feast of My Favorites
If you've learned anything about me by now, it's that I'm a foodie and I believe in serving food I actually want to eat at my own party. The menu was essentially a collection of my favorites: Fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, sweet potatoes, crab cake appetizers, bruschetta, salmon for the vegan guests and more! Was it a historically accurate menu from the court of Versailles? Absolutely not. Did I enjoy every bite? OUI OUI! 😂
And because I'm ALL about presentation, I provided the waitstaff with silver serving platters to pass hors d'oeuvres throughout the celebration. My favorite foods, yes, BUT served with a little royal treatment, of course!
🍰 Let Them Eat Cake...Literally
Whether Marie Antoinette actually uttered the infamous phrase "Let them eat cake" is highly debatable, but for the sake of a fabulous party theme, I happily ran with it. Rather than solely serving cake by the slice, each guest received their very own ornate miniature cake. Because if you're going to invite guests to a royal fête inspired by Marie Antoinette, everyone deserves their own cake.

🍰 Dessert Buffet Fit for a Queen

No Marie Antoinette celebration would be complete without an extravagant dessert display. Marie Antoinette and restraint aren't exactly synonymous haha, so one dessert table simply wasn't going to do for her nor me. I designed several dessert displays throughout the celebration, layering cakes, confections, ornate details, and decadent sweets to create a sense of abundance and excess.
Inspired by the iconic phrase, “Let them eat cake,” the sweets tables featured custom gold-gilded cakes, French macarons, French éclairs, decorated sugar cookies, crowned cake pops, cupcakes, cotton candy, and other elegant confections. The goal was opulence! Everywhere you looked, there was another delicious little detail waiting to be discovered.
I wanted the dessert displays themselves to feel as lavish and adorned as Marie Antoinette, almost like one of her elaborate gowns or jeweled accessories. I layered draping pearls, miniature dress forms, ornate serving pieces, and real vintage perfume bottles throughout the displays. I even placed crowned cake pops atop ornate vintage mirrors because a regular cake pop stand simply wasn't extravagant enough.
I also incorporated my mom's ornate telephone into the display. Was the telephone invented during Marie Antoinette's lifetime? Absolutely not. In fact, it arrived nearly a century later. 😂 But with its ornate detailing and beautifully noticeable patina, I thought it fit the display perfectly. Historical accuracy briefly left the château.
🔨 The DIY Behind the Decadence
The main dessert backdrop was actually one of my DIY projects. I built a wood wall, covered it in damask wallpaper, and added wood molding that I painted gold to create a more ornate, old-world feel. I even incorporated wall sconces, with a little help from my contractor to securely install them, and strategically planned for extension cords so the sconces could actually glow. Because decorative sconces that don't light up? Absolutely not. And candlelit ones would've been too much of a fire hazard.
The gold dessert table itself was originally a wood table I purchased from Amazon and painted gold. Sadly, it's no longer available, but it was the perfect foundation for the lavish display I had envisioned.
And yes, my dessert buffet came with specific instructions. I placed a framed sign on the display politely informing guests that the dessert buffet would open after dinner. Royal decree issued.

🪞 Cotton Candy Coif Couture

No Marie Antoinette-inspired celebration would be complete without a nod to her famously extravagant coif. In one of my favorite playful details of the evening, fluffy clouds of cotton candy served as a sweet little interpretation of Marie's towering powder-colored hairstyles.
I even tucked ostrich feathers into each grandiose floral centerpiece as another nod to the dramatic feathers Marie often wore in her elaborate coifs. The feathers added height, movement, and even more old-world glamour to the room. It was whimsical, slightly over the top, and perfectly on theme.
And naturally, I donned my own fabulous ostrich feather fan. Because... DUH. 🪶i.e. Antoinette!
🎂 Let Them Take Cake Home...
With miniature cakes and decadent treats everywhere, I knew guests would need a way to take a little piece of the fête home with them. I printed personalized labels for favor bags and placed them near the dessert displays so guests could fill their bags with cakes and succulent treats at the end of the evening.
Peep the personalized bags, because even the dessert leftovers needed custom stationery.
Which, in hindsight, makes the forgotten Chambord favors even more painful...
🍾The Royal Favor Faux Pas

And then there were the favors...The favors that, years later, I am apparently still not emotionally prepared to discuss.
After days of debating whether I could justify spending $350 on miniature bottles of Chambord, I finally went for it. Each bottle received a personalized “Merci for Coming” tag featuring a photo of yours truly, naturally. They were opulent. They were perfectly on theme. They were ready for their royal debut.
And I forgot to hand them out. Every. Single. One. 😭
I still have the bottles. Because apparently nothing says Marie Antoinette quite like holding onto a $350 party favor mistake for years.
🪭 Stephanie's Signature Tip Takeaways...
For me, luxury has always lived in the details. Crystal-draped candelabras, lush floral arrangements, jeweled napkin rings, layered textures, custom cocktails, personalized signage, antique gold accents, and carefully curated décor all worked together to create an experience that felt intentional from the moment guests arrived. It's these signature finishing touches that transform a beautiful event into an unforgettable one.
👑 Stephanie's Designer Tip No.1: Layer Lights & Heights for Drama
Luxury tablescapes feel more dynamic when décor is layered at varying heights. Combine tall floral centerpieces with crystal candelabras, taper candles, and lower decorative accents to create visual movement across the table. Instead of relying on overhead lights alone, combine candlelight, uplighting, and accent lighting to create warmth and ambiance throughout the room.
👑 Stephanie's Designer Tip No. 2: Give Your Bar a Personality
Don't settle for a generic drink menu. Create your signature cocktails after the guest of honor(s), the theme, or an inside joke. Custom cocktail menus are an inexpensive way to make your bar feel like part of the overall design.
👑 Stephanie's Designer Tip No. 3: Steam Every Linen
One wrinkled table runner can take away from an otherwise beautiful tablescape. I always recommend steaming tablecloths, runners, and napkins before guests arrive. Crisp linens provide the polished foundation every elegant event deserves.
Designer Tip: Tell a Story with Your Stationery
👑 Stephanie's Designer Tip No. 4: Tell a Story with Your Stationery: Menus, place cards, cocktail menus, and dessert labels instantly elevate the guest experience and help tell a cohesive story from start to finish. Consistent fonts, colors, and motifs help create an immersive experience that guests remember long after the party ends.
👑 Stephanie's Designer Tip No. 5: Shop Your Local Antique Store
Some of my favorite event pieces don't come from specialty rental companies. Antique shops and vintage markets are wonderful places to discover ornate frames, candleholders, serving pieces, and decorative accessories that bring timeless character to a celebration without breaking the budget.
👑 Stephanie's Designer Tip No. 6: Candlelight is Always Worth It
Nothing transforms a room quite like candlelight. Whether you're using taper candles, floating candles, or votives, the soft glow instantly creates warmth, romance, and a sense of occasion that overhead lighting simply can't replicate.
💌 Final Thoughts...

Designing my own 30th birthday gave me the opportunity to celebrate a milestone while bringing one of my favorite design inspirations to life. Years later, this soirée remains one of my favorite creations because it embodies everything I love about entertaining: Timeless elegance, immersive storytelling, and thoughtfully curated details that leave guests with an experience they'll never forget!
