Hey guys! Bienvenido a mi latest blog mini-series, titled "Miami Vices," where I'm showcasing some fun & appetizing Miami-inspired cuisine & cocktails based on my recent trip to Miami, Florida!

If you'd like to check out how I broke down the narrative of my Miami trip & experience, then make sure to read my previous blog posts that highlight some of its history & culture, and to read my blog on what I did, what I ate, where I went, & where I stayed.

Let's keep my Miami momentum going to by discussing another pivotal point in Miami's history. More specifically, in relation to Cuba & it's musical artistry, & that is with famous Cuban-American singer, Celia Cruz, who I have always been a fan of! And so, I thought that, if I had to describe Celia Cruz with a cocktail it would be my favorite cocktail, the Piña Colada. So, what better way, then to combine my favorite cocktail drink with one of my favorite artists. And I came up with the "Passion Piña Conga Colada." Watch me make it here along with my solo dance party. Click here to purchase the same cocktail glass!

Cruz's story was highlighted in the walking tour I booked in Little Havana, and so I definitely was able to learn a little more about her story. First & foremost, if you didn't know, Celia Cruz, who is also known as the “Queen of Salsa,” is an icon within the world of Latin music.

Born & raised in Havana, Cuba, she started singing & dancing from a young age and eventually joined the band, Sonora Matancera (pronounced so-NO-rah-Mah-tan-SEH-rah). Following the Cuban Revolution Cruz & her band emigrated to the U.S. as a result of political unrest & the band being exiled from Cuba. Her distinguished voice & acclaimed stage presence mixed with her avant garde fashion sense made her iconic. She was essential in making salsa music more mainstream and largely known for showcasing a lot of Black Caribbean expression, bringing it more to the forefront. Her famous key phrase “AZUCAR," served as a symbol to highlight Cuban coffee culture and the history of enslaved people on sugar plantations. Her bravery & resilience to a male-dominated music scene allowed her to be a trailblazing force for not only women, but Afro-Latina women in salsa music!
