Some birthdays deserve more than balloons and a sheet cake, and that was definitely the case with King Kiaan. How We Turned a Ballroom into a Luxurious Jungle Adventure fit for a king.

Welcome to the Jungle

Some birthdays deserve more than balloons and a sheet cake, and that was definitely the case with King Kiaan.

A first birthday is one of those milestone celebrations that parents never forget. It marks the end of an incredible first year filled with countless "firsts," and if you ask me, surviving that first year deserves a celebration in itself! It's the moment parents can finally exhale, raise a glass, and say, "Schwoo...we made it!" 😂

When King Kiaan's parents reached out once again, I was honored to be part of another milestone in their family's story. Just months earlier, I had designed Kiaan's baby shower while he was still in the womb, so being invited back to celebrate his first birthday made this event especially meaningful.

Mom knew exactly what she wanted. A jungle. Not a cartoon jungle.

Not a party store jungle. A lush, elegant jungle that would wow both children and adults alike.

Challenge accepted.

Designing the Experience

Whenever I begin designing an event, I don't start by shopping. I start with a feeling and brainstorming. For this celebration, I wanted guests to feel as though they had wandered into the heart of the jungle not stumbled upon the animal print aisle at Party City. So, rather than relying only on animal print, I layered natural textures including wood, moss, raffia, tropical greenery, earthy tones, and touches of gold. Together, those elements transformed an beautiful, but standard ballroom into a completely immersive experience.

💡 Stephanie's Designer Tip: Don't decorate around a theme. Decorate around a feeling.

The theme simply helps tell the story.

The Details

My motto is always that its ALL in the details and I believe that luxury lives in the details (!!!), and so this event was full of them!

One of my favorite DIY projects was creating oversized jungle tree centerpieces using tall white vases, insulation spray foam, paint, and layers of artificial fern leaves.

The sketched and designed the dessert table to featur jungle inspired cupcakes, zebra and giraffe print cake pops, chocolate truffles disguised as bird eggs nestled inside moss filled nests, and a custom Wild One cake that tied everything together beautifully.

Even my manicure received an animal print makeover because YES...I commit to the theme, wholeheartedly 😂.

Don't Forget the Kids

Although the adults certainly enjoyed the décor, children's parties should always include activities that keep the little guests entertained, most importantly.

For this celebration, I designed custom jungle scavenger hunt cards that encouraged the children to explore the room while searching for different safari animals.

Creating personalized games is one of my favorite ways to make an event feel unique because they're designed specifically for the birthday child and theme.

💡 Designer Tip: Games don't have to be elaborate. When they're beautifully designed and thoughtfully incorporated into the theme, they become part of the décor. I handle most of my wedding's& events stationery design & print, so these cute cards paired with brown tote were a fun DIY project for me. Fun wooden pencils were courtesy of Amazon finds!

A Little Something for the Adults

While the children enjoyed the games, the adults had their own surprise. I always lik o think of some fun littles touches & accents. I created custom "Jungle Juice" favors featuring miniature bottles of Jack Daniel's Honey Whiskey became one of the most talked about details of the evening. Because let's be honest...Parents deserve a little reward after surviving the first year too!

One More Detail You May Have Missed

I've always loved stationery. In fact, I studied graphic design for two years before transferring to Fashion Institute for design, which allows me to design custom invitations, welcome signs, games, menus, personalized party favors, and other paper goods for my clients. For King Kiaan's celebration, I designed all stationery items including, the invitations, the scavenger hunt cards, the 1st birthday signage, personalized & personalized food menus to perfectly coordinate with the event. If you're planning a celebration yourself, I also offer digital invitations and printable party stationery through my digital shop.

Behind the Design

No event goes perfectly. Minutes before guests arrived, one of my crew members accidentally snapped the custom acrylic Wild One sign while hanging it. Cue mini heart attack.

Thankfully, my emergency glue, tape, and a little creativity saved the day.

Then the DJ decided every guest table needed several business cards. Let's just say...we had a very polite conversation. Problem solved. Sometimes event design is just as much about quick thinking as it is creativity.

A Few Ideas You Can Borrow

✔ Think in layers instead of buying every jungle decoration you see.

✔ Mix wood, moss, raffia, and greenery for a more natural look.

✔ Include one memorable detail for the adults.

✔ Design games that match your theme.

✔ Remember that thoughtful details always leave a bigger impression than expensive ones.

Final Thoughts

One of my favorite parts of designing children's events is proving that "kid friendly" and "beautifully designed" are never mutually exclusive. Children deserve magical experiences.

Parents deserve to enjoy them. And guests deserve to leave talking about them long after the celebration ends. So, whether you're planning your own Wild One celebration or would rather leave the details to someone else, I hope this little behind the scenes tour inspired you to create something unforgettable.

Until next time,

Au revoir with confetti! 🎉
