Welcome to the Greatest Show on Earth

Some birthday themes never go out of style. The vintage circus is one of them.

When Melina and Roman's mom first contacted me about planning her twins' first birthday, she had one request from the very beginning. A vintage circus. Not bright plastic decorations or cartoon characters, but rather a chic, charming, nostalgic celebration. Immediately, I was inspired by vintage carnival tents, carousel horses, antique circus posters, and timeless details, and said challenge accepted!

From the moment guests walked into the backyard, I wanted them to feel as though they had stepped beneath the big top, and I wholeheartedly believe that we achieved that!

Designing the Experience

Whenever I design a themed celebration, I try to move beyond simply decorating a few things here & there. At Mariage Blanc Designs, it's important for me to create an actual experience.

For this party, that meant combining classic circus elements like carousel horses, popcorn, carnival treats, Ferris wheels, bold red and white striped fabric, and antique-inspired accents while keeping everything elegant enough for the adults to enjoy as well. One of my favorite design principles is making themed parties feel chic & elevated rather than overly commercial & tacky. Vintage details always win!

💡Stephanie's Designer Tip: When planning a themed party, choose three or four signature elements and repeat them throughout the event. It creates a cohesive look without making the space feel cluttered.

It's in the Details

As always, the magic was in the details. The dessert display featured Ferris wheel cupcake stands, gourmet caramel apples, a vintage inspired cake, classic gumball machines, circus animals, and plenty of nostalgic carnival touches.

Even the menu continued the theme. Guests enjoyed backyard favorites including hamburgers, hot dogs, barbecue chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad, coleslaw, and tossed salad, all presented with custom designed circus menu cards at every place setting.

Stationery Makes a Difference

One of my favorite parts of every event is designing the stationery. I studied graphic design for two years, so whenever possible, I love creating custom paper goods that tie the entire celebration together.

For Melina and Roman's party, I designed everything from the invitations to the menu utensil bags and thank-you favor bags, making sure every printed piece felt like part of the overall design. Beautiful stationery doesn't just communicate information.

It becomes part of the décor. If you're planning your own celebration, I also offer custom stationery design and digital invitations through my digital shop.

Don't Forget the Kids

As beautiful as the décor may be, children's parties should always include activities that keep little guests entertained. After all...The party IS for them!

Whether it's games, crafts, coloring stations, scavenger hunts, or interactive activities, I always encourage parents to plan something that allows children to participate instead of simply watching. Happy kids usually mean happy parents.

A Few Ideas You Can Borrow

✔ Mix vintage finds with modern décor for a timeless look.

✔ Incorporate themed books into your décor for added charm.

✔ Use stationery to reinforce your theme beyond the invitation.

✔ Think beyond cake by incorporating nostalgic treats like popcorn, caramel apples, and gumballs.

✔ Repeat your colors throughout the tablescape for a polished, cohesive design.

Stephanie's Little Details

🎪 Favorite Details: The dessert table is usually the star of the show, and this party is no different. I particularly love the elephant, which I purchased from Amazon and painted gold. The Ferris wheel cupcake displays were also such a charming addition and really helped bring the dessert table to life. I purchased a lot of vintage elements from local Facebook market & eBay deals, but I did my best with linking similar finds!

🎨 Favorite DIY: The dessert table signage; I purchased the wooden frame from my local craft store and drilled holes big enough to fit in string bulb lighting; Additionally, I loved every piece of stationery that I created & designed to coordinate with the party; The custom backdrop was also designed and built in-house. I constructed the panels, drilled openings to accommodate decorative elephant curtain tiebacks, and draped rich red velvet fabric to create the feeling of stepping beneath a vintage circus tent. It was one of those statement pieces that instantly transported guests into the theme while serving as the perfect backdrop for photos throughout the celebration.

🍿 Most Nostalgic Moment: Seeing guests smile when they spotted the vintage popcorn cart and gumball machines.

❤️ Client's Vision: A timeless vintage circus that felt charming rather than tacky or cheesy.

Final Thoughts

Designing Melina and Roman's first birthday reminded me that themed parties don't have to feel over the top to make a lasting impression. Sometimes it's the thoughtful details, cohesive design, and personalized touches that guests remember most. Whether you're planning your own celebration or looking for inspiration for your next event, I hope this behind-the-scenes look encourages you to have fun with your theme and create memories your family will cherish for years to come.

Until next time,

Au revoir with confetti! 🎉
